Number of Immigrants Grows in Uruguay

Montevideo, May 21 (Prensa Latina) Immigrants in Uruguay are 2.4 percent of the total population, and consist mainly of Argentines, said Foreign Minister Luis Almagro, as he introduced an informational campaign called "Positive Immigration". Almagro said that the country is currently experiencing a significant migratory flow, as well as seeing the return of Uruguayans. He said that of the 2.4 percent of the population composed of immigrants, 35 percent are Argentines, 17 percent Brazilian, 10 percent U.S. Americans, seven percent Spanish and a little more than four percent are Peruvians. Meanwhile, the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), William Swing, insists that this is an unprecedented period of human mobility: "of the seven billion people on the planet, one billion are in movement." He added that "a quarter of a million people are crossing international borders and three quarters are moving from rural to urban." "If you were to gather in a single nation the 214 million migrants that currently exist worldwide, the population would be greater than that of Brazil and remittances would amount to a gross domestic product larger than that of Saudi Arabia," he said.
