More InfoAug. 7 (Bloomberg) -- The value of Uruguayan beef exports climbed by more than half last month as rising prices more than made up for a drop in shipments.
Revenue from beef exports from the South American country rose 53 percent to $129.7 million in the month through Aug. 2, from $84.7 million in the same period a year earlier, the National Meat Institute said in a report on its Web site.
Shipments of the meat fell 16 percent to 33,569 metric tons from 39,931 tons, the institute said today. Russia and the European Union overtook the U.S. as the
biggest buyers of the country's beef. Shipments to Russia rose more than 35-fold to 101,074 tons this year through Aug. 2 from the same period a year earlier, according to the report. Sales to the EU rose 91 percent to 58,244 tons, while exports to the U.S. plunged 87 percent to 18,073, the group said.
Uruguay is the world's eighth largest beef exporter, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
